How to use it

  1. Step 1

    Pick the barcode type

EAN or UPC for shop products, ISBN for books, GS1-128 or ITF-14 for cartons, Code 128 for stock, Data Matrix for small parts, IMb for US mail.

  2. Step 2

    Type the number

We check it as you type, add a missing check digit and say exactly what's wrong if a digit doesn't match.

  3. Step 3

    Set the size

Narrow bar width and bar height in millimetres, colours, numbers on or off, and the blank margin scanners need.

  4. Step 4

    Download or make many

SVG and PDF are vector at the exact size; PNG at 150–1200 dpi. Paste a list or open a CSV to get a ZIP of hundreds at once.

Questions

Is the barcode maker free?

Yes. No account, no watermark and no limit on downloads, including bulk ZIPs of up to 1,000 codes at a time.

Can I make a barcode to sell my product in shops?

You can draw the barcode here, but the number itself must be yours: retail EAN/UPC numbers (GTINs) come from GS1, the organisation that licenses company prefixes. A made-up number may scan but can clash with someone else's product, and big retailers check GS1 registrations.

Which barcode types can it make?

Retail: EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, ISBN, ISSN and EAN-2/EAN-5 add-ons. GS1: GS1-128, ITF-14, SSCC-18 and GS1 DataBar. General: Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, Interleaved 2 of 5, Codabar, MSI and Code 11. 2D: QR, Data Matrix, GS1 Data Matrix, PDF417, Aztec and MaxiCode. Postal: USPS Intelligent Mail, Royal Mail 4-State, KIX and Japan Post. Pharmacy: Pharmacode, Code 32 and PZN.

What is a check digit?

The last digit of EAN, UPC, ISBN, ITF-14 and other numbers is worked out from the others so scanners can catch misreads. Leave it off and we add it; type it and we check it, so a typo is caught before you print 5,000 labels.

What size should I print a barcode?

Retail EAN-13 and UPC-A are designed at a 0.33 mm narrow bar (about 37 × 26 mm with the numbers) and can go from 80% to 200% of that. Don't cut the height of a retail barcode. Shipping codes like ITF-14 and GS1-128 are usually printed larger. Always scan a test print.

SVG, PNG or PDF?

SVG and PDF are vector, so they print sharp at exactly the size shown and suit print shops and design software. PNG works everywhere; choose 300 dpi for print or 600 dpi for small labels. The PNG remembers its DPI, so layout apps place it at the right size.

How do I make many barcodes at once?

Open the Many at once tab and paste one value per line, or open a CSV with a header row: a value column (value, SKU, GTIN…) and optional type and file name columns. You get a ZIP with an SVG or PNG per code, one PDF with a page per code, and an errors.csv for any row that couldn't be drawn.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Barcodes are drawn in your browser with bwip-js, an open-source barcode library (MIT licence). Your numbers and lists aren't sent to our servers.
