Free Blur Background: sharp subject, soft background
Give any photo the soft-background look of a portrait lens. The subject is found on your device and kept sharp while the rest of your own photo is blurred as much or as little as you like.
How to use it
- Step 1
Choose a photo
One clear subject works best.
- Step 2
Set the blur
A little blur looks natural; a lot makes the subject pop.
- Step 3
Refine the edge
Soften the edge for hair and fur.
- Step 4
Download
Save a JPG.
Questions
Is it free?
Yes. Blurring backgrounds is free and unlimited. Downloads up to 1500 px need no account; full-resolution files need a free account. There's no watermark.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. This tool runs in your browser: the cut-out engine is downloaded from our site and your photo stays on your device.
Does it look like a real lens blur?
It's a smooth, even blur rather than a lens simulation, so it doesn't vary with distance. It works best when the subject is clearly in front of the background.
Quick or HD cut-out?
Quick works in any current browser and is fine for most product photos. HD is much better on busy photos with several objects and on fine edges; it downloads a larger engine once (over 100 MB), needs a browser with WebGPU (a recent Chrome or Edge on a computer) and a free account. Both run on your device.
Can I use the result commercially?
Yes. What you make is yours to use. The open models we use (U²-Net, Apache 2.0; BiRefNet, MIT) allow commercial use. Make sure you have the rights to the photo you start with.
