Reading a dieline

Cut line
Where the die or cutter cuts through the board, label or film. In print-ready files it's a spot colour called CutContour.
Crease / fold line
Where the board is pressed so it folds cleanly. In print-ready files it's a spot colour called Crease. Keep small text off it.
Bleed
Artwork carries on past the cut line to here (3 mm by default) so no white edge shows if the cut moves slightly. It's trimmed off.
Safe area
Keep text, logos and barcodes inside this line so a slightly-off cut or fold never touches them.

Printing labels or packaging?

Pro removes watermarks and unlocks the print files, for as many designs as you like. This tool stays free.

How to use it

  1. Step 1

    Choose a product

Pick what you're packaging: a box, bottle, can, jar, pouch, cup, bag or label. Popular products are first; search if you know the name.

  2. Step 2

    Choose a design

Browse finished designs for that product. Filter by industry, style or colour, or search. Every design is fully editable, and you can skip this to start from a blank dieline.

  3. Step 3

    Edit text, colours and logo

Type your brand and product name, swap the colours and add your logo. The full panel editor is underneath for moving things, adding shapes, pictures and more text.

  4. Step 4

    Check the dieline

Set the inside size and board. Then look at the flat layout: artwork must reach the bleed line, text and logos must stay inside the safe area, and nothing important should sit on a fold.

  5. Step 5

    Preview in 3D

Watch the flat dieline fold into the finished pack, rotate it and try finishes. What you see is built from the same geometry as the files.

  6. Step 6

    Download or print

Sign in (free) to download. Free accounts get watermarked previews and a proof PDF for 3 product designs a month; Pro adds print-ready PDF, SVG, DXF and GLB files for your printer.

Questions

Is the dieline generator free?

Browsing, editing, checking the dieline and the 2D and 3D preview are free with no account. Downloading needs a free account: free accounts can download 3 product designs a month as watermarked mockups (up to 1200 px) and a 100 dpi proof PDF. Print-ready files come with Pro.

What counts as one product design?

One product started from one design (or a blank dieline). It counts the first time you download any file of it in a calendar month; downloading it again that month, or changing its text, colours, logo or size, doesn't count again. Picking another product or another design starts a new one.

What's a dieline?

The flat layout of a package: cut lines (where the die cuts the board), crease lines (where it folds), the bleed area artwork must extend into, and the safe area for text.

Why is there a watermark on the preview?

Previews and free downloads carry a light diagonal Educated Designer watermark. Pro and Business plans see the preview without it and download clean print files.

Which file should I send my printer?

Most printers want the print-ready PDF: the cut line is a spot colour called CutContour and folds are a spot colour called Crease, each on its own layer, with the artwork to the bleed. Die-makers and cutting tables often prefer the DXF. Both come with Pro; the free proof PDF is for checking, not for print.

Are the sizes inside or outside dimensions?

Inside dimensions, so your product fits. Panels get an allowance for the board thickness you choose, and the tool shows the flat size.

Can I open the files in Illustrator?

Yes. Illustrator opens the print-ready PDF and the SVG directly with the layers intact. We don't produce a separate .ai file.

How accurate is it?

Every dieline is checked before you see it: closed cut lines, no overlapping panels, flaps that fit, and a pack that closes when folded. Always ask your printer for a proof before a production run.
