Free Compress PDF Tool

Most of a large PDF's size is usually its photos. This tool re-saves those photos at a lower quality and size and leaves text, fonts and drawings alone, all on your device.

How to use it

  1. Step 1

Drop one or more PDFs on the page.

  2. Step 2

    Pick a level

Light keeps photos print-sharp; Strong makes the smallest files for email.

  3. Step 3

    Compress

Photos inside the PDF are re-saved in your browser.

  4. Step 4

    Download

You'll see the old and new size. If a file can't get smaller, the original is kept.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. Converting and downloading are free, with no watermark. You don't need an account for small batches.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device, so your files never leave it and we never see them. Closing the tab clears everything.

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends on what's inside. PDFs full of photos and scans often shrink a lot; PDFs that are mostly text are usually already small and may not change. The tool shows the before and after size for every file.

What does it change?

Only JPEG photos stored in colour or greyscale. Text, fonts, vector drawings, links and other kinds of images are left exactly as they were.

Will my text still be selectable?

Yes. Pages aren't turned into pictures, so text stays searchable and selectable.

How many files can I convert at once?

Up to 25 files per batch without an account, 50 with a free account and 500 on Pro. Each file can be up to 100 MB. Very large images may be scaled down to fit your browser's memory, and the tool tells you when that happens.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, image conversions keep working without a connection. PDF tools download their PDF library the first time you use them.
