Free JPG to AVIF Converter

AVIF can make photos far smaller than JPG at similar quality. Saving AVIF needs a browser with a built-in AVIF encoder; the tool checks for you and suggests WebP if yours doesn't have one.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. Converting and downloading are free, with no watermark. You don't need an account for small batches.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device, so your files never leave it and we never see them. Closing the tab clears everything.

Will I lose quality?

AVIF is a compressed format, so some detail is traded for a smaller file. At the default quality (90) the difference is hard to see; move the quality slider up for print or down for the smallest files.

Does it work in every browser?

Saving AVIF depends on your browser's built-in encoder, and many browsers don't have one yet. The tool checks before converting and suggests WebP instead when AVIF isn't available.

How many files can I convert at once?

Up to 25 files per batch without an account, 50 with a free account and 500 on Pro. Each file can be up to 100 MB. Very large images may be scaled down to fit your browser's memory, and the tool tells you when that happens.

What happens to photo details like GPS location?

By default the converted file has no metadata: camera details, date and GPS location are removed. For JPG to JPG you can choose to keep the camera details, with or without the location.
